12 Tips Stylists Swear By To Improve Your Fashion Sense

12 Tips Stylists Swear By To Improve Your Fashion Sense

Personal styles aren’t developed overnight. It takes time to experiment and explore your own fashion sense. It can be a long process, but definitely a fun one. If you’ve just started on that journey or are planning to start, here are a few tips to help you improve your fashion sense and find your personal style along the way.

Tip 1: Seek out inspiration

Inspiration acts as a fuel to many things, and fashion is no exception. Browse Pinterest, Instagram, or fashion blogs to see how other fashionistas are putting their outfits together. Or even better, head out into the real world and just people watch. (in a non-intrusive way, of course!) You’ll find that you tend to prefer certain styles over others and that can be your starting point to finding your inner ‘fashion voice’. Check our Shopprholic’s OOTDs on our Outfits page or even Instagram!

Tip 2: Start with what you got!

You’re at the early stages of your fashion discovery so there’s no need to invest huge sums into clothes that you may end up not liking. Dig around in your closet and pick out your most worn pieces. You obviously love them so try styling any new clothes you buy around those pieces. What pieces should you buy, though? Well, that brings us to tip 3!

Tip 3: Focus on the essentials

Basic pieces like plain tees and tank tops, fitted (to your body) denim jeans, well-tailored blazer and a comfy pair of heels will always be in style. Remember to get them in easily matchable colours like black, white or grey and you’re set!

Tip 4: Try a new style every week

Yes, every week! If there’s any time to challenge yourself, it’s now. Don’t push aside that off-shoulder top because you think it’s too “cute”, or that V-neck dress because it’s too “sexy” for your style. You’ll never know if you don’t try! You might just end up surprising yourself.

Tip 5: Find YOUR perfect fit

If you think you’ll look good just because you’re wearing a RM2000 blazer from Gucci, think again. Good tailoring matters but what’s more important is that it fits YOU. One size never fits all. So just keep trying until you find the right one! We promise you, the hunt will all be worthwhile when you look at the stunner that you are in the mirror.

Tip 6: Know your measurements

Shopping online can be great way of discovering new brands and trends that may not have hit our shores yet. The Ambitionista’s Heidi Nazarudin is a fan of online shopping and strongly recommends “memorising your shoulder, bust, waist, hip, and inseam measurements” to make the process easier and less risky.

Tip 7: Invest in good inner wear

“What for? Nobody’s even going to see it!” While they may not be able to see what you’re wearing underneath, you definitely can’t hide from the effects of a badly shaped bra. Good bras and panties provide support to your sisters and its cousin down south. Great bras and panties do all that while flattering your figure and giving you a boost of confidence.

Tip 8: Shop for your lifestyle

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of shopping for your new look but don’t forget to remain practical. Think about your lifestyle and how your clothes can fit into it, not the other way around. Buying 10 pairs of jeans when you work in a corporate office than has strict rules against them may not be the wisest decision. The struggle to resist is real, we know. But you can do it!

Tip 9: Don’t forget accessories

Adding accessories is one of the easiest ways to make your outfits look more polished. Stylist Michelle Combs suggests “throwing on a statement necklace, an intricate bracelet, or even some standout earrings”. Just don’t over do it. If you think you’ve got too much going on, you probably do.

Tip 10: When in doubt, keep it simple

There will be days when it may seem like nothing is working or looks right and that’s A-OK. It’s perfectly fine to have simple days. Simple doesn’t have to mean sloppy. A pair of jeans, a plain white tee topped over with a blazer and your most trusted heels. Ta-da! Simple yet still totally chic. Exactly why tip 3 is key!

Tip 11: From H to T

Celebrity stylist, Rachel Zoe, says “getting dressed is a head-to-toe experience, so you have to think about how your hair and makeup play into what you're wearing.” So think about the big picture. You may only be wearing a tank top tucked into your jeans, but finish it off with a pop of bright red lippie and put your hair up into a messy top knot and boom! Fashionista alert.

Tip 12: Rock it with confidence

At the end of the day, your best accessory is your confidence and attitude. If you feel good, you’ll look good. So experiment, play around with different looks and styles, but always, always remember to feel good in what you’re wearing!

The Must-Have Guide: Festival Essentials You Need

By Yi Jun

The Must-Have Guide: Festival Essentials You Need

You didn’t think we’d let you party not in style, right? Whether for Good Vibes Festival that’s coming up soon or for next year’s Coachella (we’re hardcore like that), here’s a festival-themed must-haves piece we came up with just for you!

Must-Have: Slip dress

They’re comfortable enough for you to dance around, stylish enough for you to outshine the rest. Wear cute body chains over it for some extra bling. Not loving the exposure? Wear a simple tee underneath that slip dress. If Kylie Jenner’s doing it, you can too.

Must-Have: Printed Co-Ords

Let’s be real, co-ords were created just so you can look cute without trying. To go with the festival theme, opt for printed and colourful ones. If anyone says you’re wearing too much colours, rain(bow) over their boring and dull parade.

Must-Have: Floral Kimonos

As cliché as it may be, you know a festival is incomplete without this staple. It’s light, it’s fun and when it gets chilly, it’ll make the girl next to you in tank top and short shorts wish she brought hers too. If your outfit is fairly simple, a kimono is perfect to bring it up a notch.

Must-Have: Lace Crop Top

We get it, you just wanna go casual and listen to some good music. Wear lace crop tops and a nice pair of high-waisted shorts. Now you’re casual AND chic ;) If you want something more boho-esque, try wearing a loose lace top over a bralet or tank top.

Must-Have: Ripped Denim Shorts

You can’t go wrong with the classics. Now of course, you can opt for ripped jeans, but in case it gets too hot and humid, these ripped denim shorts are your best bet. Pair with a high-slit dress or maybe a lace crop top (winkwink), and you’re good to go!
